Meta está a perder em AI: compra da Scale AI e equipa Super Intelligence

Jun 18, 2025

About this conversation

Meta's $14.3 billion acquisition of Scale AI reads less like a smart business deal and more like an act of competitive desperation. The company isn't buying Scale for its revenue streams or growth potential. It's buying access to the operational secrets of its rivals—specifically, the data pipelines and preparation methods that OpenAI and Google have kept proprietary. Once the deal closes, OpenAI and Google will stop being clients. That's not collateral damage; it's the entire point.

This move confirms what technologists have been saying for months: the model architectures are converging. GPT-4, Claude, and Llama are structurally similar. What separates a capable model from a mediocre one is no longer the transformer or the parameter count. It's the data—what you train on, how you curate it, and crucially, how you structure the reasoning chains. Scale AI specializes in this last part. It hires PhDs across domains to solve complex problems step-by-step, generating the chain-of-thought datasets that teach models to reason rather than merely pattern-match. Scale has built infrastructure around the most opaque part of model training: human-in-the-loop data creation at scale.

Meta's Llama 4 is capable, and it's open-source—but open-source only matters if you can cheaply retrain it. The real gap is in reasoning performance, where OpenAI's o1 and Anthropic's Claude have pulled ahead. That gap exists because Meta doesn't have access to the same caliber of reasoning datasets. Buying Scale doesn't immediately fix this, but it gives Meta the blueprint. Mark Zuckerberg is also launching a new "Super Intelligence" team with Alexander Wang, Scale's 28-year-old CEO, now heading it with nine-figure compensation budgets. Zuckerberg is burning cash to catch up—throwing money directly at the problem in a way that signals he understands the stakes but not necessarily the timeline. Scale AI itself isn't particularly scalable: it relies on human effort. But Meta isn't buying a scalable business. It's buying time and knowledge it couldn't otherwise access.
